Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best breed of cat to buy ?

I feel breed choice is a very personal choice. With purebred cats you can look for specific traits that you prefer and that suits your home and lifestyle as well. You can look for things such as activity level, playfulness , attention needs, affection toward owners, vocalises, intelligence, and compatibility with children and other pets. Most pedigreed cats have a breed profile.

Is cats/kittens all different in personality ?

yes they sure are , they are all very unique and all have different personalities just as every child does.

   Bengals

Bengal's have a leopard look, are they friendly?

Yes they are very friendly.  They have been breeding these cats for docility since 1963 and are now one of the most affectionate cats you can find, but they seem to frighten easily. They say most don't get along with dogs very well. Do all Bengals have spots? No, spotted and marbled are the patterns allowed in the Bengal breed. The pattern is hard to predict.

I have heard that Bengals are smart, are they?

You bet they are !!! These cats are the easiest to train, and they seem to figure out small problems, like where are the kitten treats. Bengal's are rated as one of the most intelligent of all domestic cats, that may be why they are the 2nd most popular cat in the U.S.

Is the Bengal a loud breed?

Most Bengal's are not very vocal, some do " talk " though. If they are not neutered, they get pretty loud when looking for a mate.  They for sure get loud enough that you will get them neutered ASAP.

Are Bengals ok with kids?

Most do not do to well with little ones, but then we have some that are great with our Lil ones. Bengals can frighten easily. They are fine with most other cats. Our Bengals don't mind our dogs at all, but then again our dogs don't mind them either. My personal experience is different from all the textbooks; I have young children around them with no problem. These cats do not like being held tightly though or restrained, you must be gentle.

  ManxWhere do Manx come from?

Originally the Manx developed on the Isle of Man in the Irish sea, 2 breeds of tailless cat developed there naturally with out the inference of humans, the Manx and the Cymric (a long haired version of the Manx)

 Why don't Manx have tails?
This gets complicated but Manx have a Homozygous gene that causes a shortened spine (i.e. tail) the tail comes in 4 types - rumpy, rumpy riser, stumpy, and long.   This Homozygous gene makes the Manx kitten mortality rate high.

Do Manx get along with other pets?
Manx are rated as 1 of the most compatible cat with children and other pets, Our Manx really seem to like dogs.( Probably the best all around pedigreed cat there is for a home)

Do Manx make a lot of noise?

The Manx vocal level is way down on the scale. They don't meow a lot, but they do purr allot. Most of the timethey get vocal to tell you something, like food, water, play time or "hey you Theresa a dirty litter box over here."

Does having no tail cause a health problem?

No, once the kittens get past 6 wks their health care needs are minimal, getting them past the first 6 wks is what makes them so hard to raise.
Abyssinian

These cats look like little mountain loins, are they friendly?

Abby's are rated as one of the most docile of all the domestic cats. They like petting and head scratching, but not much holding. Abby's don't like feeling trapped in any way what so ever.

Do Abyssinian get along with other pets?
That is a hard one to answer, our Abby’s do OK with other cats, but not our dogs. These cats are better off with adults, children seem to move to quick for them, and they get pretty frightened. Are Abyssinians very vocal?
Not really, they don't "talk" often or even purr allot. Our Abby's usually only talk when we are feeding them.  Abby’s normal way to get attention is physical; they will rub on you or put their head in your hand for scratching, and probably grab you if you miss feeding time. These cats are a lot of fun!!
I want a cat that is playful, how are Abyssinians?

You bet they are!  Abby's are rated as one of the most playful of all domestic cats, and the most active. They run, jump, chase, and to them all things are toys, and they are known as the clowns of the cat world.
Are there any health concerns with this breed?
Yes, Abyssinia's are prone to gingivitis, always ask your vet to brush their teeth, or you can do it.

Pet Care

What is the best food for cats?

(We feed a mix of "Taste of the Wild and Science Diet")

Dry cat foods are normally the best choice; choose a food that lists meat as its first ingredient (beef, chicken, lamb) high protean, and high fat. Canned cat food is not better for your cat! You are paying for water, and wet foods will not keep your cats teeth clean. We only feed to nursing mothers to help with fluid intake, not as a replacement for dry food.

What cat litter should I use?

Again this is a personal choice.  I find that the cat box chore the worst part of owning a cat. A clumping easy sifting litter makes this a minor job. The most common mistake is not using enough litter in the pan to start with.  A litter box that starts with a full pan of a good scoop able product is easy to take care of.   Some of the litters today are flushable, so I recommend keeping your cat box in the bathroom where you can take care of this chore in less then a minute every day.

Do cats need their teeth brushed
Some breeds need dental care quarterly, some never need it, breeding, food type, and a yearly visit to your vet will tell the story
Can I let my cat outside?

Some cats should never go out on the ground, others will be no problem, forexample a long-haired cat like a Persian can bring in a lot of stuff.  Some are so dependent on people if they get lost they will not survive. Just use good judgment. I personally feel that if you keep cats indoors it prolongs their life (most outdoor cats only live to be 3-5 years on average) If you feel your cat/kitten must be outdoors for a short period of time please use an enclosed "run" which is protected from predators and infection from other animals.

 Should I DE-claw my cat?
I personable am totally against the DE-clawing of cats,so naturally i would say Do Not De-claw if at all possible.

De-clawing is a horrible mutilation involving the amputation of a large portion of the kitten’s toes which in most cases will alter a kitten’s/cats personality/temperament and general well being.

Instead of  De-clawing you may want to find other ways like keep the kitten’s toenails trimmed regularly, and to supply the kitten/car with proper scratching trees/posts and suitable training.

If furniture scratching is the problem, try getting a good solid scratching post and put catnip on it to encourage your cat to use it. Now if the problem is the cat scratching your child then you may need to have it done, a child is more important then a few days discomfort for the cat. If you must De-claw, then only the front claws please.
